Operations ended as part of efficiency move

As part of efforts to streamline the UK greyhound protection movement, Greyhound Action ceased operations in May 2011.

Tony Peters, Greyhound Action's former UK Co-ordinator, who is now helping with the organisation of several other animal protection campaigns, had this to say about the changes:

"Greyhound Action was just one of several greyhound protection campaigns in the UK and this situation was leading to some confusion and a considerable duplication of effort.

"Therefore, in the interests of efficiency and effectiveness, a decision was made that Greyhound Action should cease operations and encourage its sympathisers to support those other campaigns.

"I continue to be involved in campaigning for greyhound protection, but the changes have given me the welcome opportunity to spend more time promoting veganism and efforts to protect all animals from exploitation and persecution."

Please note:-

The Greyhound Action PO box remains in operation, with correspondence being forwarded to other greyhound protection groups.

Existing Greyhound Action leaflets, postcards etc. can still be distributed while stocks last, but new leaflets and other campaign materials will carry contact details for other groups.

The Greyhound Action bank account will remain open, with all funds being used for the production of campaign materials for other greyhound protection groups, so if you currently contribute to Greyhound Action by PayPal or standing order, you don't need to make any changes.

The Irish Greyhound Board has shelved plans to export greyhounds to China after the Department of Agriculture refused to approve the proposal.

Heartfelt thanks to all those who took part in demos, wrote letters, gave out leaflets and did all you could to save these dogs from an appalling fate.

The battle isn't over yet though, as the IGB still wants to be involved in the promotion of dog racing in China, where greyhounds will suffer and die horrendously, no matter what country they come from.

Greyhound Action Ireland will be spearheading the campaign to stop this from happening and we'll be keeping you informed of developments and letting you know how you can help.

Greyhound Derby demos/leafletting - extra help needed at Wimbledon

Appeal for volunteers for June 4th & 11th

The race meeting at Wimbledon Stadium on Saturday June 11th includes the Final of the William Hill sponsored Greyhound Derby, the biggest event in the British greyhound racing calendar.

For this reason, our South West London branch are appealing for extra support for their demo/leafletting outside the stadium that evening, so please do your best to attend, especially if you live in or near the area.

There will be a demo outside the main gate of the stadium from 5.15pm until 8pm and then leafletting from 10pm until 11.30pm to catch the punters coming out.

If you can help at either, or both, of these, please call 07583 313246 or 07982 247293.

Extra help is also needed with leafletting on Saturday June 4th, when the semi-finals of the event are taking place. Once again, please call the numbers above, if you can help.

By Rail: Haydons Road (First Capital Connect) or Earlsfield (from Waterloo - Southwest Trains). All stations are a short cab ride to the stadium.
By Tube: Tooting Broadway (Northern Line), Wimbledon station (District Line), both stations are short drive from the stadium and Wimbledon Station has a black cab rank outside.

Greyhound Awareness Week May 21st - 29th

Greyhound Awareness Week gives an opportunity for all those concerned about the plight of greyhounds to educate the public about the mass slaughter of dogs caused by the greyhound racing industry.

With a large enough boycott by ordinary people, the industry can be brought to its knees and the suffering and untimely death of thousands of greyhounds prevented.

Street stalls, demos outside greyhound tracks, betting shop pickets and other events will be taking place throughout the country. Anyone who would like to organise or take part in an event in their local area, please contact Action for Greyhounds (info@actionforgreyhounds.co.uk or 01603 469864) for leaflets, posters, petition forms etc.

It would also help greatly if all of our supporters/sympathisers could write letters to their local papers about Greyhound Awareness Week. Below is a sample letter you can send, or if you so wish, you can compose your own.

SAMPLE LETTER RE GREYHOUND AWARENESS WEEK

May 21st - 29th is Greyhound Awareness Week, when events are held across the UK to draw public attention to the plight of greyhounds.

According to international greyhound protection organisation Action for Greyhounds, over 10,000 greyhounds, bred for the British racing industry, are "put down" every year, after failing to make the grade as racers or when their "careers" on the tracks come to an end.

An RSPCA report on greyhound racing has stated that "at least 20 greyhounds a day - either puppies which do not make the track, or 'retired' dogs aged three or four - simply 'disappear', presumed killed".

In addition, a large number of greyhounds sustain serious, sometimes fatal, injuries whilst racing, due to the dangerous nature of the tracks.

Members of the public can help put an end to this horrific situation by not attending dog tracks or betting on greyhound racing, so this appalling industry fades away through lack of financial support.

Urgent Irish Greyhound Board/China

In light of recent reports that the Irish Greyhound Board (IGB) have had talks with Chinese investors about the establishment of a Greyhound industry in China, I have been informed that an official proposal has now been submitted to the Dept of Agriculture in Ireland. The proposal asks for approval to set up greyhound racing in China including the exportation of Irish dogs.

I am now urging everyone to write to the Dept of Agriculture in Ireland (Simon.coveney@oir.ie) to express your deep concern about this issue (below is a letter template, if required).

Dear Simon Coveney

I am writing to you about my concerns in relation to the involvement of the Irish Greyhound Board (IGB) in talks with a Chinese delegation concerning the establishment of a greyhound industry in China. I am particularly worried that this project may include the export of Irish greyhounds.

I consider this initiative by the IGB to be ill-advised and a massive step backwards in achieving a well regulated and safe environment for greyhounds both in Ireland and elsewhere in the world. The idea of sending greyhounds to China stands in stark contrast to the letter and spirit of the recently drafted Welfare of Greyhounds Bill 2010, which was finalised by the Department of Agriculture following extensive consultation with the greyhound industry and the welfare community.

As a concerned individual who believes in the welfare of dogs I want to seem regulation of the greyhound industry with better welfare provision for greyhounds, during breeding, training, kennelling, racing, transportation and retirement. Despite the best intentions of the IGB I believe this will be impossible to monitor in China, a country where there is no legislative protection for greyhounds.

I respectfully ask that you intervene in this matter in order to prevent a situation which will reflect poorly on Ireland, having already received global condemnation with regards to this matter and most importantly which will adversely impact the welfare of Irish greyhounds.

Irish Greyhound Export to China...proposal is moving ahead...URGENT action needed

Many people involved in welfare and who are greyhound "owners" have been sending emails and letters to the Irish government to oppose the idea of sending greyhounds to China, and there have also been demonstrations at Irish embassies in several countries. This has had some affect on the Department of Agriculture, which very recently received a formal proposal from the Irish Greyhound Board to consider the China project.

However, it was learned TODAY that Adrian Neilan, the CEO of the Irish Greyhound Board, was at the government offices in Dublin lobbying for the government to sign off and give approval or commitment for the project. He is under pressure from the Chinese investors to get this underway immediately.

We need an ocean of reasonable and rational letters and emails to be sent to the powers that be in order to have any chance of not letting our beautiful greyhounds be sent to a place where there is no future for them, no comfort, not a chance in hell for them to ever have a good life of any kind.

There is no need to convince you with photos and videos showing unspeakable atrocities being done to dogs there - you can find these yourself on the internet. You will then know what sort of future China holds for our greyhounds, and it is not a place to send a dog.

I urge you to please, tonight or tomorrow, send a letter or email to the following people so that they hear our voices and will not overlook the welfare side of this issue. Ireland has been in the news too many times now for welfare issues, from the New York Times' coverage of the dreadful treatment of horses to Ireland's reputation as "the puppy farm capital of Europe", we don't want to also be known as the place that sent its greyhounds to a country with no animal welfare practice in place, where there is no overarching regulation of the veterinary profession, where even Australia does not choose to deal with the Chinese on this issue. We have only in recent years just managed for the racetracks in Spain to be closed down.....now we have China.

Please don't let our greyhounds be sent there. It will be hell on earth for them.

GREYHOUND ACTION IRELAND is sickened and appalled that the Irish Greyhound Board (Bord na gCon) has planned to send Irish greyhounds to China to expand greyhound racing in Asia.

Already much criticized for their overbreeding of greyhound dogs and for their total disregard for the welfare of ex-racing dogs here in Ireland, this latest move is shameful.

This move confirms what we have been saying all along .the IGB couldn't care less about the tens of thousands of Irish dogs they breed to die. Greyhounds in Ireland have been found mutilated, with ears cut off, drugged, hanged, drowned and killed by bolt gun in backstreet slaughterhouses. A minute percentage get homes here as will not be the case in China.

In the aftermath of Chinese officials visiting Dublin earlier this month to see how the Irish greyhound-racing industry is run and regulated. An IGB spokesman said the board informed the Department of Agriculture, which regulates the transport of greyhounds, about its expansion plans.

"As with any country we do not have any influence on the welfare standards adopted in other countries, and these matters are more appropriately dealt with by the country's own legislative system," the spokesman said. The export of greyhounds was a matter for individuals and Bord na gCon, said the Department of Agriculture. "The board has informed us that they are exploring the possibility of assisting with the establishment of greyhound racing in China," it said.

We in GAI say, 'Imagine sending animals to a country where they will be treated even worse than they are here, dogs in China are considered meat, many beaten brutally to tenderise their meat before they are often skinned alive. Cats and dogs there have absolutely no protection from those who will breed and kill them at will be it for food or fur. Irish dogs are already being sold on to Pakistanis for racing and coursing there. Pakistan, being a Moslem country where dogs are considered unclean, is the last place on earth where anyone would send an animal.'

GREYHOUND ACTION appeals to the IGB to review its ill-considered plans to make money from dog exports to China. We will be urging the public to shun the tracks here in Ireland and we will expose the hypocrisy of Irish greyhound breeders and trainers.

We are constantly being told when leafleting at dog tracks that there are many 'good' greyhound men, If this rare breed exists ,they should stand up in opposition to this' last straw' of animal abuse. 2002 demo against planning permission being given for the track

A columnist in the Edinburgh Evening News has today written her column in support of the track at Wallyford. This bint, Helen Martin who writes her column as "Bitching from Bruntsfield", has previously used her column to support greyhound racing and is very friendly with a local trainer. So far there has been pretty good responses from local people who, as far as I'm aware, are completely unrelated to our campaign.

Greyhound death-toll down again

Latest research by investigative group Greyhound Watch (GW) indicates that almost 10,500 greyhounds are now being put to death annually, because of the existence of the British dog racing industry.

The estimated figure of 10,442 deaths annually, is, of course, horrific, but the good news for greyhounds is that it is almost 1,800 fewer than the previous year (see http://tinyurl.com/GreyhoundsKilled2009).

The reason for this encouraging fall in the greyhound death-toll is because fewer of these dogs are now being bred to be used as commodities by the racing industry. This decline in breeding is due to a fall in demand, brought about by the closure of tracks and a reduction in the number of greyhound races taking place (down by over 2,000 from 2009).

Demos at Coventry Stadium helped force the track there to close

Yet more evidence that our public education campaign, aimed at persuading people not to attend or bet on dog racing, is saving greyhounds from death and suffering.

Greyhound racing also causes the deaths of many thousands of other dogs apart from greyhounds, as places in homes and rescue kennels, which could go to other stray and "unwanted" dogs, are taken up by greyhounds got rid of by the racing industry, meaning that those other dogs are "put down" because there is nowhere for them to go.

Therefore, the latest figures are also good news for non-greyhound dogs, as the fewer greyhounds that are "disposed of", the more chance there is of "unwanted" other dogs being able to find homes.

In addition to the appalling injuries to racing dogs that occur all too frequently at stadiums like Peterborough, it must also be remembered that these tracks are each responsible, on average, for the deaths of over 400 greyhounds per year, because of the demand they create for these dogs to be bred and subsequently disposed of.

Great news for greyhounds as racing fund is slashed

The Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB), which administers, funds and promotes British greyhound racing, has been forced to slash its budget by a further 23%.

This has been caused because even fewer people are betting on dog racing, which has led to yet another reduction in the British Greyhound Racing Fund, which is made up of a percentage of the money wagered on greyhound races.

Although the GBGB budget cut means there will be less money going into welfare, the overall news for greyhounds is excellent, because it includes a 9% cut in prize-money support, a huge reduction in the capital spending budget for tracks, from £430,000 to zero, and a £400,000 cut in national marketing.

These reductions will no doubt push even more tracks toward closure and hasten the ultimate demise of the dog racing industry, which is, of course, the best news the greyhounds could ever be given.

Towcester horse racing course is drawing up plans to build a greyhound track.

Within days of the start of Bedfordshire Greyhound Action's campaign to close the dog track at Henlow Stadium, we have received the following message:-

Our local pub had an outing to Henlow dog track in Bedfordshire yesterday and my husband and I went along. There were a couple of people with placards at the gate – until I saw them I hadn’t really thought anything about the dogs themselves - if I had done, I would have assumed they were cared for. When I got home, I looked up information on the internet, and won’t be going again.

This is very encouraging, as, in our experience, for every person who tells us they will never attend greyhound racing again, there are many others who have also been put off from "going to the dogs", but don't take the trouble to get in touch.

Campaign launched to close Henlow greyhound track

Following a very successful demonstration on November 27th, local Greyhound Action supporters have decided to launch a campaign to close the greyhound track at Henlow Stadium and are hoping to hold regular demos/leafletting there on Saturday evenings.

There was controversy surrounding the Henlow track last year when a trainer who races greyhounds there had four healthy dogs "put down" by a local vet (see www.thecomet.net/news/inquiry_launched_after_vet_destoys_greyhounds_1_271862)

In addition to such appalling incidents, the existence of the track is responsible for the putting to death of an estimated 400+ greyhounds every year, because of the demand it creates for these dogs to be bred and subsequently disposed of, after failing to make the grade as racers or when their "careers" on the track come to an end.

We're very happy to bring you the good news that Cathy Clements successfully completed the Stratford Big 10k race, which she ran to raise much-needed funds for Greyhound Action's campaign to protect greyhounds from suffering and slaughter.

Here's what Cathy had to say about her run:-

"I thought all of you who had sponsored me would like to hear how the race went last weekend. With the training done it was time to put it all into action.
It started out flat along a disused railway which got me well warmed up then after 5k the hills started coming and though they were demanding I kept up the pace and didn't walk once. I was determined to keep running and the down hill sections gave great relief.
The atmosphere was brilliant, the views were wonderful and occasional spectators gave support from the side-lines which really gave me a spring in my step.
Of course the thought of raising money for GA was never far from my thoughts, so I knew there was no letting up. It was a fantastic feeling to finally cross the finish line seeing smiles from my supporters and I suddenly felt like I could do it all again.
Thanks so much to all who supported me and helped me raise money for Greyhound Action, they are always in desperate need of funds so I know they will be pleased with every penny."

Lush to launch greyhound protection campaign

We are delighted to announce that Lush Cosmetics is launching an in-store campaign "to highlight the cruelty that is going on in greyhound racing".

The campaign, which will run in more than 90 Lush stores throughout the UK and Ireland from October 11th - 17th, is aimed at helping Greyhound Action in our mission to educate the public about the problems with betting on greyhound racing and going to the tracks.

Lush, which operates a strict policy against animal testing and supports Fair Trade and Community Trade initiatives, has already staged many campaigns in support of animal and environmental protection and human rights issues (see http://www.lush.co.uk/articles/our_ethical_campaigns/introduction.html).

Lush's most important date and time for the greyhounds is Wednesday, October 13th at 12 noon, when the media will be invited to stores that are running the campaign. Lush shop assistants will be wearing running numbers and carrying placards saying "Don't bet on it! Greyhound Awareness Week goes well

Demo outside Hall Green Stadium, Birmingham during Greyhound Awareness Week

The Week gave an opportunity for all those concerned about the plight of greyhounds to educate the public about the mass slaughter of dogs caused by the greyhound racing industry, and street stalls, demos outside greyhound tracks and other educational events took place in various parts of the country.

What was particularly pleasing this year was the amount of media attention generated, with many of our supporters' letters being published in local newspapers and an extensive report on Sky News (see http://tinyurl.com/SkyNews-GAW).

Help close Manchester death track!

Greyhound Action North-West (GANW) are appealing for more help and support for their efforts to end greyhound racing at Manchester's Belle Vue Stadium.

Their campaign has been so successful in reducing attendances at dog racing there, that Belle Vue has called a halt to Tuesday night races and made a number of staff members redundant because of financial problems.

The Racing Post has reported that the stadium may have to cease holding some of its more lucrative races, because it is having difficulty finding sponsors to fund them.

Belle Vue has also been hit very hard by a report in the Manchester Evening News about the large number of greyhounds that are being seriously injured and "put down" at the stadium (See www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/s/1232532_30_injured_greyhounds_put_down_at_dog_track).

With the track in such a weak financial situation, now is the time to give increased support to the campaign to totally end dog racing there.

GANW hold demos/leafletting sessions outside the stadium almost every Saturday evening, but urgently need more volunteers to help keep these going.

From Heaven to Hell - The Story of the Galgo Espanol by Beryl Brennan

Here's what Beryl has told us about her recently published book:-

"My book is a definitive guide to the Galgo Espanol, I don't think there is another one on the market, I haven't found one. I explore the breed from ancient history to present day, methods of disposal, dog pounds and killing stations, diseases, EU and Spanish Animal Welfare Acts - including ones which could be used to stop the maltreatment of galgos - Spanish and International Rescue Associations, educating the young, and how to solve the problem in which I discuss banning racing and hunting with galgos.
There is also a chapter on the racing and hunting federations, in which I attack them for not putting an end to what they do, and to this chapter is added an extract (about 4 pages) from a report presented by Beatrice Monnet of L'Europe des Levriers, the association I mainly work with) to the European Commission calling for a ban on hunting with galgos.
I also mention the GRGB (Greyhound Board of Great Britain) and the fact that they claim reports of maltreatment to greyhounds are isolated incidents and that the rescue associations and GA can absolutely prove otherwise, and I attack the government, regional, provincial and municipal authorities for doing nothing about it and also, without actually using the word 'corrupt' show how corrupt it all is because judges, police etc are also hunters and will not take the steps necessary to help stamp out hunting with galgos.
My book is intended to expose, publicise and explain to everyone in one source (there's plenty of lots of different websites, but not all together in one source) how the problem of the galgos - especially hanging them from trees - has come about and to shame Spain into doing something about it."
